Headaches
Headache is probably one of the most common complaints of people we encounter in clinical practice. We all know that it can result from a lot of factors – stress, certain activities we are not used to, weather fluctuations, some specific food in our diet and even the presence of co-morbid conditions, to name a few.
In Chinese Medicine, headaches may occur because of exposure to some factors which are (1) external pathogens such as the invasion of
Wind Cold
,
Wind Heat
,
Damp
, Dry, Fire or may be a result of (2) internal factors such as the lack of or deficiency of what we call the vital substances – Qi, blood, essence, body fluid; or may be due to
turbid phlegm
or
blood stagnation
; or imbalance/disorder of the different internal organs, ex. Liver Yang Rising; Kidney Deficiency.
Depending on the location and or type of pain of the headache, Chinese Medicine is able to treat the source by use of Acupuncture and the use of Herbal medicine.
Some of the herbal medicines used include the following: Chuan Xiong, Qiang Huo, Bai Zhi, Bo He, Ma Huang, Sang Ye, Jing Jie, Tian Ma, Gou Ten, Shi Jue Ming, Niu Xi, Dai Zhe Shi, Long Gu, Mu Li, Ling Yang Jiao.
