Sprains

A joint sprain is the overstretching or tearing of ligaments. Ligaments are the bands of tissue that connect two bones together in a joint. The most common location for a sprain is the ankle joint.  Common symptoms of sprains include the following: bruising, pain around the affected joint; swelling, limited flexibility and difficulty using the joint’s full range of motion.  The most commonly affected joints include the following: back, wrist, knee, ankle, thumb.

According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), pre-existing factors that contribute to ankle sprains include the consumption of the qi and blood (creating Liver and Kidney deficiency); accumulation of dampness; invasion of external pathogens (wind, cold, damp); and blood stagnation.
